Founded in 1870 by Félix López, Herradura is one of the oldest producers of tequila. Herradura is distilled at Hacienda de San José del Refugio, located in the small town of Amatitán, which is considered by many to be the birthplace of tequila. The traditional production process is overseen by Maria Teresa Lara, one of only a few female Maestra Tequileras (Master Distillers) in the world.
Every year while aging their, Maria tastes through the Reposado barrels and sets a few of her favorites aside for additional aging. Initially aged for 11 months in charred American white oak barrels, she puts her favorites into another new, charred oak barrel for an additional month. A sort of hybrid between a reposado and an anejo, the result is a rich, dark amber colored tequila with notes of cooked agave, vanilla, allspice, clove, toasted oak and caramel. A great sipping tequila for fans of Reposados or Anejos - Typically only sold by the barrel, this is one that we always want but can't usually get, and it's ON SALE!!
